The Outcome

A pilot project was launched in Grenada to evaluate the feasibility of converting Sargassum seaweed into biogas and organic fertilizer. As part of this initiative, a biodigester was installed at True Blue Bay Resort, providing a real-world demonstration where the biogas is used in the bakery and the organic fertilizer in the gardens.

In collaboration with KTH – Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden), the project has also generated ten dissertation studies, each examining different aspects of the initiative, including:

Two studies analyzed the quality and quantity of methane gas produced.
Three studies examined the quality of the biofertilizer derived from Sargassum.
Two studies explored the Sargassum collection and storage logistics of scaling the operation.
One study assessed the potential to connect the energy produced by the biodigester to Grenada’s national grid by generating electricity.
One study focused on the dimensioning and establishment of the scaled-up facility.
One study explored the technical feasibility of long-term Sargassum storage.
